workplace violence: all in a days work

from http://www.strivingafterwind.com:

allinadayswork video (.WMV, 4MB)

we have a web cam (internal) set up to capture a picture every minute of the day, from 8 to 4. this is the video made on the first day by putting all the frames together. some of the stop-motion sequences were a pain because we had to watch the clock, and jump out of our seats to pose. And then we’d continue our work. Despite how that may appear, we did get a lot of work done that day.

there is some music in parts of the video, but it isn’t necessary. you should watch until the fade to black.

in the future i don’t think we are capturing videos of a whole day at work, but might get someone to manually capture frames for some more stop-motion goodness.

ps. it’s labelled armcam, because back in the day, that’s what the camera was focused on — our arms.

Firefox owns my babies

I just discovered with Firefox that if you have multiple tabs open and you go to Tools –> Options –> General Tab…when you assign your home page it will assign all open tabs…that means when you open up Firefox it will open all those tabs to all those pages.
that is freakin awesome.
Now my Firefox opens up to my company email, my gmail, my personal email, digg.com and woot.com
Firefox is the best invention ever.

Hey

Hey everyone…just saying hi. Growing up seems to even make vifl change. Sometimes I wish I didn’t grow up. Miss ya’ll.

doit. doit.

but i’ll just crash on your bedroom floor. cool?

its a sign

i just found out that where i work is right across the highway from a residental development named “Holliday”. most would just think of this as a mere coincidence…

i’m going to sell my house and move there.

nuptials

ryan…sorry i didn’t make it to your wedding, man. i was still at school finishing up things. i’ve seen like 2 pictures on daniel’s xanga proving that the event did, in fact, happen. however, i’ve heard very little about it. did anything sweet happen?

i wish you the very best.

i’ve been writing stuff on my xanga that i’m too lazy to copy here.

Is this heresy?!

Do you think that having a good strong relationship with Christ completely fulfills the voids we have inside or is there more to it? I’m not talking about joy or comfort in knowing that we will be with Him for eternity…I mean that if we have a strong relationship with Him will we feel absolutely complete just in that fact and not needing other relationships?

THANKS

James, Drew, Jeff, everybody, lots of thanks for all of you giving so much attention to my conundrum. Each answer was insightful in its own way. And I like VIFL more now ;)
I think my answer, at the moment (it could change, I don’t know) is to SUGGEST nudity (shoulder, back, etc.) without showing anything; which, I believe, can be provocative as well, and therefore a lot of it will be the way I shoot the scene. As for the question, “should you, Jacob, be seeing breasts, even if they’re not in the movie?” I guess that’s an individual question that can only be answered by me, unless there’s someone else who knows me so well (i.e. God) to tell me otherwise. So God is my Judge. (ohhh yeaahh, you go Daniel Myers)

And as for a final question… Should my motion picture include… THE SIDE BOOB?

WWPGD? (Peter Griffin)

my reply on Xanga

well…what is your purpose for making this short film?
Is it to provide art to the non-Christian world? Is it to provide art to the Christian world? Is it to provide art to both?
I think the answer to all of those questions is pretty easy.
If it’s the first, show breasts if you want.
If it’s the second, don’t show breasts.
If it’s the third, then you need to figure out whether you WANT to show breasts. If you feel you need to, then do it. If you feel that it is not required to make the film true, then it’s best to avoid it.

If your intention is just so you get to see boobs…well then you just need to visit a strip club.

of course, this is the point in the discussion where I say to you that you are a Christian. What we do isn’t for this world, nor should it be.

As to the other question, specifically:
“Should Christians always shy away from sexual content and even discussion of sex, for the purpose of not ’stumbling’?”
First that seems like a loaded question. You group “sexual content” and “discussion of sex” in such a way as to make it seem disdainful to shy away from either.
God gave us sex for a reason. That reason is definatly not JUST for the procreation of the species, the reason most definatly involves enjoyment. However, just because we have the “tools” for a task, does not mean that task is always the correct resolution to a situation.
Wow…I sure make sex sound boring.
Let me rephrase.
Just because God gave us the ability to have sex, doesn’t mean that there AREN’T times and places where it is innapropriate in action or context.

*edit*
I agree with Drew…that would be creepy to have the actress be someone I knew.
Actually…that makes me think of a question for you. Why is it necessary that the actress be nude in the scene? For artistic integrity? You don’t think you can accomplish the scene accurately without her actually being nude?
Just wondering.

They’re breasts, not boobs.

So is it you, personally making the movie, or are you quoting someone? (The answer may be obvious, but I still want to be sure.)

If so, who has agreed to do the scene? I ask this because my personal feelings would be “pretty creeped out” if she was someone I know. Otherwise, not so much.

I have thought about the idea of artistic nudity and its relationship to biblical morals. Of course in contemporary North American Christianity any sort of nudity is of the Devil. For many people, though, nudity is merely another part of life. The early Christian (and Christian influenced) artists seem to reflect this truth; thus, the nudity abounding in their art. Somewhere along the line — perhaps with the Protestant Reformation — the church became utterly prudish and anything associated with sex became unbelievably sinful or unspeakable.

Any student of art must be aware of the motivation and influences behind the art, namely, culture . One may look at Da Vinci’s “David” and translate it to be a sculpture of the David of the Bible. This is wrong. The notably large hands of the man lead many to believe this to represent the the artist’s humanistic perspective. Also, if my art history is correct, the trend of nudes started in the Roman empire. We can note that many of the more prevalent perspectives of the times exalted group sexual acts as part of community and religious life (i.e. homosexual orgies at the public baths and temple prostitution).

So on one hand, I’m fine with eating meat offered to idols (note the implied connection with the topic at hand). But on the other end, there are plenty of men who can’t look at a nude and not see a naked woman. Similarly, there are plenty of women who get very offended at the opportunity for men to think inappropriately.

This leads me to another biblical perspective. After the Fall, God gave Adam and Eve clothes to cover their nakedness, which is representative of their knowledge of sin. From this point on, nudity was to be for husband and wife (and not even children — remember the curse that was placed on Noah’s son when he looked on his nakedness…)

Interpretation comes into play here, and with it, the aforementioned North American Christianity. Violence is condemned in the Bible just like sexual sin. If you survey a group of Christians, you would come to the conclusion that violence in movies is not in line with their morals. You might also find, though, that 8 in 10 or so of these same Christians went to see or possibly even own a copy of “The Passion of the Christ.” So then, in real life, violence is immoral, but for didactic or persuasive purposes, it is acceptable and even encouraged. How then can someone who operates with this method say that showing situations that may not even have sexual connotations (i.e. a dipiction of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden) be inherently sinful. One may respond with the statement that people natually associate nudity outside a marital relationship with immoral sexuality but seeing violence doesn’t make anyone sin like nudity does. Wrong. However hypothetical the situation might be, what about the sadist in the audience. He readily sins when he views violence. No one can rightfully and consistently claim that there are situations that are sinproof and acceptable and use this idea to condemn others.

With all this said, I still fall on the conservative side — mainly because we cannot remove ourselves from our context. Nudity and sexuality are still justifiably rather strongly viewed subjects among Christians and in our culture which has many origins in some sort of Christianity. In one sense, the “Don’t rock the boat” argument seems weak, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t live by it. I think that anyone who wants to create something that intentionally includes such volatile content should be very cautious and preemptively clear about motivations and purposes for it. There can be educational or inspirational value in a realistic depiction of intimate or morally charged situations, but it must be approached with sincerety, caution, and clarity of purpose.

Nudity

I had posted this on my xanga so I’ll post it here:

EXT. DAVID’S ROOF (this entire scene has a rotating, almost dizzying effect)

[2:47] - David is on his roof when he eyes Bathsheba, seen in the distance.

EXT. BATH

CLOSE UP: Bathsheba’s long, dark, sleek hair rises from the water. Perhaps ZOOM OUT a bit.

EXT. DAVID’S ROOF

David looks viciously lustful.

EXT. BATH

Bathsheba sees him.

INT. CHAMBER

[3:02] PAN from RIGHT to left: Bathsheba lies on a bed in raggedy clothes, holding her very pregnant stomach. Her eyes roll up in her head as she cries. End shot with her releasing a sharp scream that sounds like a birth pang.

INT. CAVE

[3:07] - David, his men behind him, now marches through the cave. His expression is determined, angry, almost possessed like Saul’s.

CUT back and forth between David marching in the cave and:

INT. PALACE - HALLWAY

David marches, the same way as in the cave, down the hallway. Bathsheba, eerily lit, stands looking vulnerable, seductive, at the end of the hallway.

This is a brief scene from my newest screenplay, and it seems to be creating something of a controversy among the Christian community! Mainly because I have an actress who has agreed to play Bathsheba, and to be nude as Bathsheba. But the question is, will I show nudity? Originally, my response was, “probably.” But never exploitively. In general, I was just thinking that I’ll shoot the bathtub/bathing scene (would there even be technically a bathtub? what did they bathe in? was it outside of Uriah’s house? I don’t know!). And if a booby snuck in there, then it would. No biggie. That’s still how I feel about it. A boob’s a boob. If it’s pornographic then it has the INTENTION of being pornographic. Context is critical for nudity. I believe that nudity can, in fact, be of good taste.

Others disagree with me. They say that including the nudity will “cause other Christians to stumble.” At this point, I may exclude nudity simply because of how other Christians feel about it. But I’m still questioning.

Your comments? Opinions? What do you think about nudity in the context of Christian films? Where does one “draw the line?” How does one distinguish tastefulness from pornography? Is there such a thing as tasteful nudity? Should Christians always shy away from sexual content and even discussion of sex, for the purpose of not “stumbling”?

I don’t believe that simply seeing a naked woman would make me “stumble.” For others it may. I don’t know, I’m just thinking!

Thoughts please. Debate is encouraged.
