You need to find out whether your motherboard can support DDR2 ram or not. The best way is find what version of Dell PC you have and then call their hotline (or start googling the version number)
As far as video card, you're going to want one with tv-out probably.
I can see if I have anything I can send you for free. (find out what motherboard you have and I can know for sure if the cards I have would work)
If by "media" you mean movies...you're going to want a bigger hard drive. If by "media" you mean presentations, 40 gigs should be fine.

I'll let you know about the motherboard.

Most of the media will be presentations, maybe some music.

If I want to use a movie, I'll just burn a DVD.

I have 2 slots for DDR SDRAM, with a max of 512 each.

Dell Dimension 4500 Motherboard 2P997-2263 (according to http://www.discountelectronics.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2263&gclid=CK3HpPSM5ZECFSGWGgodNURaeQ)

Is there any reason I can't do any of this myself?

From what I can discover, yes that motherboard accepts DDR ram. The ram you posted above is DDR2 ram. They are not compatible. Sadly, it's actually becoming more difficult to find DDR ram (since the market is now up to DDR3).

As for installing it yourself, it is indeed a piece of cake to switch ram in and out.
