Surprise!

Alright guys, we need to start talking about supplies.  Without Drew/Peter to supply us with alot of things we need to look for them on our own.

First (and most important) thing:
Tents.  There are at least 9 of us going (Ryan, Leo, Daniel, Jacob, Drew S., Ben, Me, Lewis, Brandon Hammotronic)
- Ryan can provide one for 2 people
- I think I can get a tent, but I have no idea how many people it’s for.  Let’s be safe and say 2-3.
- We still need tent space for 4-5 people.

Lighters and Flashlights.  Chime in if you can provide.

Hatchet and knives.  I have 2 pocket knives, 1 hunting knife and my machete (which can be a hatchet in a pinch).  Ben has a hatchet he said he can bring if he can find it.

First Aid kit.  We absolutely need one of these.  We’ve used one most of the years we’ve gone.  Needs at minimum bandages, disinfectant wipes, aspirin, etc.

Skillet.  Leo usually provides this correct?

Cooking rack?  I know that we usually figure something out, but it would be really nice if we could just bring a cooking rack to put the skillet/food on.

Trash bags.  We go through tons of these every year.  Let’s have good ones that won’t split this time around.

Then there are all the personal items everyone needs.  Blankets, clothes, pillows, food, drinks, etc.

We should probably talk about whether we are going to split food and drinks and if we are what everyone thinks we should get.  I’m going to be honest and say the last few years I have thrown in on food pretty good because I always felt like God blessed me with a good job.  Last time around I spent nearly $300 on this trip…I definitely can’t do that this time around…so let’s get cheap food. :)

Anyone got anything else they think we need to bring or figure out?

Extra points for anyone who can figure out the semi-racist title to this post!

Also, do we have any idea who’s riding with who?
Right now we’re an odd man out at 9 people. I wouldn’t mind getting at least 1 kayak again. I’d be willing to take it at least on the first day. I liked the kayak last time thought it is definitely more work, but it also works better for a fat kid like me because it has a shallower draft.

So 4 canoes 1 kayak? Some other configuration?

i’m riding with your mom. guess that makes 10. zing.

i found some cheap camping hammocks on ebay. that’d be pretty sweet.

I’m pretty sure Ryan said his tent would sleep 4 comfortably.

Last year, it was my big tent, ryan’s big tent and jacob slept by himself in a small one i think. (remember how miserable Jacob was that night?)

I can probably locate my big one again… sleeps 4.

We could really simplify things and just bring hot dogs…cook them with sticks…wouldn’t need a grill or pan or anything. We threw away like 20 hamburgers last year. Just sayin’.

I emailed some outfitters in the Salem area today, and I’ll call and make reservations tomorrow…. assuming we agree on what we want.

I’d say 4 canoes and one kayak would be a good plan, but I thought we’d decided to do rafts?

    Let me know.

Also, Matt called me and said he’s trying to get out of his previous engagement… if that happens would we want to get another canoe and no kayak or just another kayak? Problem with kayaks…you have to pawn all your crap onto someone else’s ship.

well if we do at least one raft it can carry the majority of the stuff and will probably not tip just a suggestion. we all remember the turn of death. maybe 1 kayak a raft and a few canoes I dunno whatever works good. My tent does sleep at least 4 it was me jimmy and drew with plenty more room last year so maybe one more medium sized tent.

I think we all remember a lack of flash lights last year and fire making equipment I was the only one who brought a lighter ha! If we plan on some cave diving everyone needs to bring a flash light. I’ll bet someone has a first aid kit lying around. Don’t forget bug spray sun block and camping chair (mine was the village bicycle last year).

oh and I”m FRIGGIN PUMPED HOOOAH

    oh and kayaks suck

I seriously am requesting a kayak. Just saying.

i don’t think rafts and canoes are compatible speed-wise. I say we go with one or the other. Like we discussed, we’ll probably do a significantly shorter float if we do rafts.

well we know the canoes lets just do canoes. Does anybody have the lockable rubbermaid tubs. I have one. I remember the higginbothams used them and kept everything dry. just a suggestion. oh and jimmy if you kayak you have to captain’s log it the whole time…. VIFL rules section 32 paragraph 3 ask jon he’s got the rule book he’ll back me up.

The only problem with me doing a Captain’s Log is that I am not as funny as Jacob, nor as interesting (i.e. weird).
I have, however, already purchased 3 Moleskin notebooks for Jacobs use should he require it. These are the types of notebooks that Hemmingway, Picasso and Matisse used. Hopefully being connected with such great visionaries of the past will awaken his artistic sensibilities.

Leo, when you call just inform them that we aren’t 100% sure on whether we will want 2 kayaks or another canoe. If Matt does show and we have even numbers and no one else wants a kayak I will deal without one but I would prefer to have one if I can.

Ryan, I think I have one of the things you’re talking about. I’ll have to check my house tonight if I remember.

dang, all this talk is making me sick. wish i could be there, fellas.

  13. 13 leo kempf Aug 14th, 2008 at 9:55 am

Just talked with matt. He’s not going to make it, but is getting into town that monday (day after float) and would like to hang out with folks Monday night.

I’ll check when I get back to my house about different things. I should be able to scrounge up a few things. Also, do we know how the transportation is working? I’d assume we are carpooling as much as possible because our government has decide to be dominated by foreign oil despite the fact that we have a large supply of our own oil on US soil and global warming is a farce. I’m good with just hot dogs BTW. We need lots of water, or those water purification tablets…..and we need river currency if you know what I mean. *wink* *wink* (I mean marijuana.) That’s a joke btw, no drugs ever! It’s bad for you and illegal, though we could have bought that grill with it last year.
