I think we should give out of our abundance and our regular income. Though it should be with a happy heart. I say give to charities. Give to friends. Give, give, give. The tithe, which means 10 percent, is no longer really an essential to the Christian faith though it is practice as doctrine in many places. That was a Jewish thing. We are to give as generously as we can. I think that learning to give cheerfully out of our normal and perhaps impoverished state can teach us a lot. The more you give the less hold money seems to have on you. At least that’s what I’ve found. I’m always blessed by my giving too. I am never in need really. My needs are met. I have food, clothes, and a place to live. I’m set. Everything else is whatever. I mean bills to pay, but all the entertainment stuff is quite secondary now. Though I spend money to do things with friends. I give to my local church here in Mexico, I support a girl named Irene in Africa, I give to AIDS research, and I off and on donate to other Missionary work. I’m living ok too. My income is less than half of poverty level in the USA> I know things are cheaper here, but I still have bills to pay back in the USA. SO I guess what I’m saying is, give as you would and don’t be afraid to sacrifice. God has your back. I mean, it’s his money anyways. Also, give to the beggars some.
It’s all about love eh?
Those are my 4 cents of random thoughts in a somewhat cohesive shell.
When we were at a place where we could afford to buy useless stuff or nicer things than we needed, we agreed to give away an equal amount to what we would spend on ourselves. This kept us from going overboard.
Currently, we support one missionary family in the Philippines and one missionary in Germany. We have budgeted to give to periodic needs, also. If we don’t use it, we usually give it to a ministry in the Texas borderland.
Compared to the world, Americans are big on charity, but not on taxes (even when those taxes go to support charities).
